Stage West Theatre had its official “wall-breaking” Tuesday for upcoming renovations and additions to a building originally built in 1930.
The regional theatre company bought the venue located on West Vickery Boulevard in January 2018. A little over a year later, the theatre launched a three-year campaign called Stage West: Setting the Stage for the Future. The goal is to produce an enhanced experience for guests and a more efficient workspace for staff and performers.
The building was originally a bus garage used by the city. Over a series of three phases, Stage West hopes to include a flexible black box theatre with state-of-the-art technology, new dressing rooms and bathrooms, a new box office at the front of the venue, and new administrative offices. The theatre will also be adding a smaller rehearsal hall/performance space that could house up to 40 people.
With funds for Phase One secured, renovations are set to begin March 2.
“When all three phases are complete, people should expect a community commons for all people to use,” says Executive Producer Dana Schultes. “We will raise the bar and what will be able to do.”
Over the past year, through efforts from Schultes and Fundraising Committee Chair Bronson Davis, Stage West has raised over $2.7 million of the $4.5 million goal.
The theatre’s goal is to have these new additions up and running for its 42nd season, which will run from October 2020 through September 2021.
“There is nothing like this in the community,” Schultes says. “This project will result in a very unique performance space that should resonate for many generations to come.”
