A Wish With Wings
At a Wish with Wings’ Butterfly & Boots Ball, $50 got a guest a glass of champagne, a pouch with a clear gemstone, and a ticket to a raffle. And for one lucky purchaser, their raffle ticket also meant the clear gemstone in their pouch wasn’t any regular gemstone — in other words, not cubic zirconia — but an honest-to-goodness diamond.
This was only one of several rewards for people who opened their wallets and purses at the annual gala and nonprofit’s signature event; it was previously called Butterfly Wishes.
Trips, dinners, private concerts, signed guitars, and one-of-a-kind photos were all items won by attendees who placed the highest bids during coinciding silent and live auctions; a rare, original print of a 1982 photo of then-Texas Governor Ann Richards and Dolly Parton laughing and sporting matching perms went for $10,000. And even more rewarding: All of the proceeds benefit a Wish with Wings, a Fort Worth-based nonprofit that grants wishes to children with life-threatening medical diagnoses. Since the organization’s establishment in 1982, the charity has granted over 1,900 wishes to children in North Texas.
A guest of honor and one of the most popular attendees at this year’s event, which took place at Simmons Bank Pavilion at Dickies Arena, was a 6-year-old girl appropriately named Dream, whose multiple diagnoses have rendered her nonambulatory — unable to walk — and non-verbal. In January, a Wish With Wings introduced Dream and her family to a newly renovated home that has been modified to meet the needs of Dream and her family. After a brief video about Dream and her new home, a special announcement from the main mouse himself, Mickey, revealed that an anonymous donor was sending Dream and her family to Disney World.
After the live auction, local duo Jolie Holliday and Sonny Burgess provided the night’s entertainment with a dance-happy repertoire of country hits.
In addition to granting wishes for children, money raised will also help A Wish With Wings upgrade their current facilities with a playground for kids.
The charity is also the main beneficiary of this year’s Fort Worth Magazine Dream Home, which opens for touring May 31. A Wish with Wings receives proceeds from ticket sales, which you can purchase here.
