the devil's ring
"The Devil's Ring," directed by Fort Worth native Juan Salas, tells the story of a former inmate seeking redemption in the boxing ring.
A new, independently made boxing film directed by a Fort Worth native is making its debut this weekend — and of course, the hometown crowd gets to see it first.
A kickoff screening for "The Devil's Ring" will take place Friday at the Crockett Row Movie Tavern (2872 Crockett St.) before the official red carpet premiere Saturday at Dallas' Angelika Theatre.
Director Juan Salas snagged some pretty big names for the cast, including Damian Chapa and Victor Rivers of the 1993 cult classic, “Blood In, Blood Out,” and two-time boxing world champion Paulie Ayala. The film also stars Al Dias ("The Ringer") and Violeta Ortega, who made an appearance in the Fort Worth-made football movie "12 Mighty Orphans" this past summer.
"The Devil's Ring" tells the story of a former inmate, Anthony Santiago (played by Alexander Luna), who's seeking redemption by way of pursuing a boxing career. A deal goes wrong with an aptly named boxing promoter — that is, Mr. Deville, played by Chapa — and Santiago gets caught "in a literal fight for his soul from the Devil himself," the film's description reads.
“I have always been a fan of boxing, the dedication and sportsmanship. I grew up watching all the 'Rocky' movies and now the 'Creed' films,” Salas said in a statement. “I think everyone in a way sees themselves in them, striving for greatness and the struggle each great character goes through, and we were excited to enlist Damian Chapa of the iconic film 'Blood In Blood Out' to take on this cautionary tale of ambition and the price of glory."
Additional screenings will take place Saturday at the Galaxy Theatre in Ennis and Sunday at Texas Theatre in Dallas. Then on Tuesday, the film will begin streaming through Gravitas Distribution on Video on Demand via Comcast, Verizon and Charter, and SVOD streaming platforms Apple, Amazon, Google Play, Vudu and more.
