Taylor Sheridan’s TV empire continues to expand like an unchecked oil spill, and this time, he might be pulling out the big guns — or at least, the most iconic mustache in Hollywood. According to Puck’s Matthew Belloni, Sam Elliott is reportedly saddling up once again, this time for a main role in the second season of “Landman.”
That’s right. The gravel-voiced, cowboy hat-clad legend who stole scenes (and a SAG Award) in “1883” is allegedly coming back for more Sheridan-verse action. The specifics? Paramount+ hasn’t officially confirmed anything yet, but let’s be honest — if Sam Elliott and Billy Bob Thornton are about to share screen time, we’re in for a masterclass in grizzled charisma. Belloni teased, “His scenes with Billy Bob Thornton should be fun.” Fun? Try legendary.
Meanwhile, in a plot twist no one saw coming (except everyone), Jon Hamm won’t be returning for “Landman” Season 2. Turns out, his contract was always a one-and-done deal. Instead, Demi Moore — who played his barely-there wife in Season 1 — is set to step up as a main character. So, for those of you hoping for more Hamm in a cowboy hat, sorry. But hey, at least we’re getting Elliott, whose mustache alone could outact most of Hollywood.
Sheridan’s signature move — recycling his favorite actors — strikes again. Thornton first popped up in “1883” before leading “Landman,” and now Elliott is making the same transition. If Sheridan keeps this up, we might as well brace for Kevin Costner to show up as a weathered oil tycoon in some upcoming spinoff (oh wait, they’re already looking for a “Kevin Costner type” for another “Yellowstone” offshoot — more on that later).
Elliott’s last run in the Sheridan-verse was as Shea Brennan, the cowboy-turned-tragic-hero of “1883,” a performance that earned him the SAG Award and a speech dripping with humility: “I’m gonna treasure this guy, this gal, because it comes from all of you, my brothers and sisters from SAG-AFTRA. I’ll treasure it as a constant reminder of ‘1883’ and what a gift it was for all of us on both sides of the camera.” Now, swap out the frontier for oil fields, and we’re about to see how Elliott handles land grabs instead of cattle drives.
And in case you were worried that Sheridan might finally take a break — don’t. The guy’s TV factory is running hotter than a Texas summer. Belloni reports that production is gearing up for the next “Yellowstone” spinoff featuring Cole Hauser and Kelly Reilly (yes, Rip and Beth are back), though they’re still searching for their not-Kevin Costner Costner replacement. Plus, yet another spinoff is in the works because, clearly, Sheridan is determined to single-handedly keep Paramount+ in business.
So, if you thought the “Yellowstone” train was slowing down, think again. Sam Elliott’s back, Jon Hamm’s out, and the Sheridan-verse keeps on expanding.
