Editor's Note: (This article contains spoilers for "Landman" Season 1)
The wait is over. One of Hollywood's worst-kept secrets has finally made its grand entrance —“Landman” is officially back for Season 2, according to Paramount+. After a whirlwind debut that captured audiences across the globe, the Taylor Sheridan drama, starring the inimitable Billy Bob Thornton, has been renewed by Paramount+. The show’s meteoric success placed it firmly alongside other Paramount+ crown jewels like “Tulsa King,” “Lioness,” and “1923” — a league all its own.
Created by Sheridan and Christian Wallace, “Landman” offers an immersive dive into the West Texas oil world — an industry defined by high-stakes deals, billion-dollar fortunes, and the personal costs that come with it all. The series, inspired by the 11-part podcast “Boomtown,” blends corporate intrigue with family drama, wrapped in Sheridan's signature neo-Western storytelling. It’s gritty, emotional, and rich with the kind of tension that keeps you hooked. And at the center of it all, Thornton’s Tommy Norris. But his ride isn’t a smooth one.
Alongside Thornton, a powerhouse cast brings the drama to life: Demi Moore, Andy Garcia, Ali Larter, Jacob Lofland, Michelle Randolph, Paulina Chávez, and more. Together, they fuel a story that’s not just about oil — it’s about power, legacy, and the shadow of a dying empire.
Chris McCarthy, CEO of Paramount Global’s Streaming and Studios, summed it up in a statement: ‘Landman’ wasn’t just another show; it was the kind of cultural juggernaut Sheridan is known for. "The series has helped drive Paramount+ to new heights,” he says. “Alongside “Tulsa King,” “The Agency,” “Lioness,” and “Dexter: Original Sin,” “Landman” was one of the biggest shows of the year, tapping into themes of rugged individualism, ambition, and the complexities of climate change and economic growth."
Season 1: A Rollercoaster Ending
The finale of “Landman” Season 1 left us all breathless. The death of Jon Hamm’s oil tycoon, Monty Miller, after a heart attack and failed surgery, set the stage for what’s next. Without Hamm’s character, we know Monty won’t be returning — confirming what some fans feared while others clung to hope. But as Hamm himself said, “heavy is the head that wears the crown.” With Monty gone, Tommy faces a monumental shift in his life — one that’s both personal and professional. “Careful what you wish for,” Hamm mused to The Hollywood Reporter, pointing to the pressure on Thornton’s character in Season 2.
Throughout the first season, Tommy’s world is turned upside-down by his daughter, Ainsley (Randolph), who rolls into town with an attitude as rebellious as the town’s roughnecks. Add in his ex-wife Angela (Larter), and the oil industry’s high-stakes drama is juxtaposed with moments of pure chaos, like drunken nights at the country club and strip clubs with senior citizens. Meanwhile, Tommy’s son, Cooper (Lofland), is introduced to the gritty world of oil rigs — until a tragic accident changes his course. He finds himself in love with the widow of a colleague, and like his father, seeks his own identity in a world that never stops spinning.
Season 2 promises to expand on these themes and the larger-than-life characters Sheridan and Wallace have introduced.
Paramount+ wasn’t just dipping its toes into the oil-slicked waters of “Landman” — the streamer knew it had something special from the start. The show’s debut in November marked the most successful in two years, and by January, the finale left audiences eager for more. The series earned the top spot for Paramount+’s global premieres and finales, a title that will only cement its legacy as one of the platform’s defining shows.
For those who need to revisit the explosive first season before diving into the next chapter, “Landman” will be available on DVD and Blu-ray starting May 13, featuring never-before-seen footage and exclusive behind-the-scenes content. The entire first season is also streaming on Paramount+, ready for any rewatch cravings.
As the excitement builds for Season 2, we can only imagine the twists, betrayals, and oil-fueled battles waiting ahead. And as “Landman” continues to push the boundaries of storytelling, one thing is clear: Sheridan and his team are not done with West Texas yet. Get ready for more.
