Breanna Nix never expected to make it this far, least of all on national television. A stay-at-home mom from Denton, Texas, with a heart full of gospel and a voice built for country soul, she submitted her “American Idol” audition video “kind of like a joke.” Now, she’s in the Top 3 of Season 23, trading school drop-offs for standing ovations and proving that motherhood and music can walk hand in hand. Rooted in her Christian faith and fueled by a lifelong love of storytelling, Nix brings raw honesty and powerhouse vocals to every performance — whether she’s tackling Queen, belting Lauren Alaina, or delivering a vulnerable ballad with her signature fire. The world is just now catching on to what Breanna's family and church have known for years: this woman was born to sing. We recently had a chance to catch up with the singer between wardrobe changes while staying constantly on the move.
Fort Worth Magazine: Let’s start at the beginning—what made you decide to audition for ‘American Idol’?
Breanna Nix: I submitted the video kind of like a joke. That’s a bad word to say, but really, I thought, “Heck, what do I have to lose?” I figured they’d say no — but why not just try?
FWM: Balancing motherhood with a competition like this can’t be easy. How do you manage it?
Breanna: Honestly, I feel overwhelmed sometimes with everything I have to do. But I also feel empowered because I’m doing it for my son. One day I’m in wardrobe, the next I’m on the phone dealing with an ear infection — but it’s all for him and my husband. That motivates me to keep going. It’s chaotic, sure, but short-term sacrifice for long-term gain? Worth it.
FWM: You’ve described yourself as a Christian country artist. How do your faith and musical style connect?
Breanna: My faith goes hand in hand with country music. Country is storytelling — and my life, my story, it’s all about how God’s been there every step of the way. I want people to hear that in my songs, to feel how faith has carried me through.
FWM: Your performance of ‘The Show Must Go On’ by Queen was a big moment. What made you choose that song?
Breanna: That one pushed me hard. I’ve only ever sung Christian and country music, but I love Queen. I thought, ‘What’s the hardest thing I could do?’ The song, the outfit, the makeup — it was all out of my comfort zone. But that’s why I did it. I wanted to see what I’m capable of when I really go for it.
FWM: If you could collaborate with any artist — living or not — who would it be?
Breanna: Brandon Lake, Jelly Roll, Carrie Underwood, and Danny Gokey. They’ve all inspired me deeply, musically and personally. Jelly Roll and Danny Gokey’s stories really resonate with me, and Carrie, she’s the reason I learned to belt and sing the way I do.
FWM: You’ve gone through a big weight loss transformation. How has that shaped your journey?
Breanna: It taught me that I’m the only person standing in my way. Idol and my weight loss kind of went hand in hand — it was hard, but it showed me what I’m capable of. Every time I thought, ‘This is too much,’ I reminded myself: ‘You’re able. You’re capable.’
FWM: What’s been the most rewarding part of this ‘American Idol’ journey so far?
Breanna: Learning who I really am. When I auditioned, I didn’t think I was good enough. I was terrified to sing in front of people. Now? I’m in the Top 5, and I’ve gained so much confidence. I look in the mirror and I actually love who I see. That’s the growth I’m proud of.
FWM: How do you stay grounded with all this pressure?
Breanna: Prayer. I talk to God all the time. I journal, I listen to worship music, and I pour my thoughts out in writing. God gives me strength I didn’t know I had.
FWM: What are your music career goals after ‘Idol’?
Breanna: I want to release as many songs as I can and travel the world sharing them. I’ve written so many songs over the years — I’m ready to put them out there and become the artist I was always meant to be.
FWM: How do you plan to balance your music career with being a mom?
Breanna: My husband is super musically gifted, and my son is our little sidekick — he’s the best. They’re my team. We’ve already traveled the country together, visiting churches, and I don’t plan to stop. Honestly, I feel total peace about it.
FWM: Last question — what advice would you give to other stay-at-home parents chasing a dream?
Breanna: Go for it. Nothing can stop you if God has a plan for your life. The worst they can say is no — and you’ve probably heard that before. Being a parent doesn’t make you less of a dreamer. It makes your dreams even more powerful. Take a chance. Do the thing that scares you. You only live once — ride the rollercoaster with no regrets.
