The famous 'beer-can house' on the corner of Currie and Whitmore streets near Montgomery Plaza is one of the many things about Fort Worth that contributes to the "Funky Town" moniker.
The house, dubbed as both an eyesore and a treasure, has recently sold. The area is under development, and all of the other homes on the block have been leveled. The house is expected to be torn down to make room for the development.
The home's owner, Louis Torres, is responsible for the nearly 3,000 cans of empty beer draping the trees, fences and the house on the lot. Torres creates the "decorations" by cutting the cans in different ways and stringing them together. Starting the project involves drinking all the beer first, which Torres has some part in.
The empty beer cans created a problem between Torres and the city of Fort Worth in 2012 because of the appearance of the property. He had to take down the beer cans, but after a compromise, he was allowed to put them back up as long as it was kept on his property.
If you want to get a glimpse of the famous Fort Worth 'beer-can house', do it soon before the house becomes a thing of the past.
