“Man on Fire,” a film documentary produced by a TCU alumnus, will have its Fort Worth-Dallas region premiere at TCU on March 1.
Producer James Chase Sanchez graduated from TCU in 2017 with a Ph.D. in English. His research deals with people and how they approach racial issues in the 21st century. His hometown, Grand Saline, is where the documentary takes place.
The film tells the story about Charles Moore, a preacher, who set himself on fire in 2014 to spread awareness on racism to his town. Sanchez said “Man on Fire” primarily focuses on two things: The final day of Moore's life and interviews with residents of Grand Saline on their thoughts about racism.
“The film combines those two narratives to help us better understand why Charles Moore committed this act and what people think about him,” he said.
Sanchez also said he hopes showing this film in Texas will spark conversations about race in the community.
“I think many people who watch this film will see part of their own families or part of their own society,” he said. “They'll know people like the people being interviewed.”
“Man on Fire” was chosen to screen at the Slamdance Film Festival in January, which coincided with Sundance Film Festival, and was selected as a winner of an International Documentary Association Award.
The screening will begin at 7 p.m. in Sid Richardson Lecture Hall 4. The film will last about 54 minutes, and a 45-minute Q&A with Sanchez and director Joel Fendelman will follow.
