Classical music enthusiasts will have to wait a little over a year before they can once again be mesmerized by the world's top pianists at a Van Cliburn competition. Nonetheless, The Cliburn is making preparations for 2022, with dates now set for the amateur version of its signature event.
The Cliburn International Amateur Piano Competition will be held from Oct. 12 – 18, 2022, following the previously announced dates of the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, which will take place June 2 – 18, 2022.
Competitors who were unable to compete in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic will be able to participate in the 2022 amateur event. These competitors represent 18 countries and range in age from 35 to 69, according to The Cliburn.
Should any competitors decline, preselected alternates from the 2020 applicant pool will be invited to compete; and in the unlikely circumstance that positions become available for the 2022 amateur competition, applications will reopen in July 2021, with a finalized list of participants to be set by July 2022. Tickets for the amateur competition will go on sale in summer 2022.
The preliminary and semifinal rounds will take place at PepsiCo Recital Hall at TCU, and the final round will take place at Bass Performance Hall. The semifinal and final rounds will also be live-streamed at cliburn.org.
Additionally, 24 pianists have been selected to play as non-competing participants and will perform for up to 15 minutes in front of jurors, as well as participate in other festival activities.
Founded in Fort Worth with the goal to advance classical music across the globe, the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition has long helped pianists establish their careers. The competition has been held every four years since 1962, while the amateur competition, established in 1999, is open to non-professional pianists 35 years of age and older.
The jury chairman for the amateur competition will be renowned pianist and winner of the first Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, Ralph Votapek.
The Cliburn International Junior Piano Competition and Festival, open to pianists ages 13 – 17, will be held in June 2023.
