Even if you can’t make it back to The State Fair of Texas by the time it closes ― next Sunday, Oct. 20 ― you can still get your fill of some delicious Fair-inspired fare around the area.
That’s right. Big Tex is heading back to storage, the midway is about to power down, and if you haven’t gotten there by Sunday, there will be no more fair food for you. But you can still get your fill at some other local haunts.
Heim Barbecue has a beer-battered Corn Dog on their menu. In the “on-a-stick” category, this barbecue-style corn dog comes in your choice of Heim’s signature Black Pepper Sausage or Jalapeño Cheddar Sausage. It is batter-dipped and fried to golden perfection. And for dessert, try one of their seasonal Fried Hand-Pies for a real throwback.

The Biscuit Bar has two locations so far in Dallas (one on Hillcrest near SMU, and another located in Plano’s Granite Park) and one more on the way to the Stockyards too. Their Biscuit Nuggets are deep-fried biscuits covered in vanilla caramel and topped with house-made whipped cream.
Elote is another fair favorite that’s easy to enjoy on the go. Chef Justin Box serves his roasted corn on the cob, topped with house-created chili powder blends and a list of inventive toppings, bringing this south-of-the-border staple to his EB2 at the Crockett Row Food Hall. Many of his ingredients are sourced straight from Mexico and local farms for some authentic flair.
People flock to the fair for its legendary fried food selections, from deep-fried butter to Twinkies. PINSTACK’s Fried Pickles are a more convenient way to get your fried fix, and they are on the savory side. They’re crispy and tangy, and served with a side of chipotle ranch for dipping.
Roger’s Roundhouse serves the ultimate fair staple year-round. Their State Fair Style Funnel Cake is just the way you imagined it: fresh from the fryer and dusted with powdered sugar. They taste just like the real deal.
Not to be outdone, Blue Sushi has their Hotel Cali Roll. This tempura-fried maki roll is filled with spicy crab mix, cream cheese, jalapeño, and avocado, all topped with a sweet chili sauce. The fried delicacy is an upscale, international twist on typical State Fair eats.
To toast the end of this year’s State Fair, head over to Whiskey Ranch’s TX Tavern on Thursday or Friday from 4 to 6 p.m. for a sweet treat. They are serving a TX Cotton Candy Bowl Martini. The cocktail is a bright combination of bubble gum simple syrup, fresh lemon, sugar, smooth TX Whiskey, and sweet cotton candy garnish.
