A familiar name in the local restaurant and bar scene has recently taken over the unique space at 1264 W. Magnolia Ave, formerly La Zona.
La Zona, the quirky concept that opened in January of 2018, finally imploded and closed for good in early December, just shy of its second birthday.
A familiar name in the local restaurant and bar scene has recently taken over the unique space at 1264 W. Magnolia Ave.
A sign on the door states: “La Zona is Closed. Exciting things coming soon! Property is not for sale or lease.” The new ownership plans to add a new restaurant, patio and bar to Magnolia Avenue, but is not ready to divulge the details just yet. Ultimately, it will become a classier and more functional space.
Stay tuned to find out how the space will take shape. More details soon to come.
The high-minded concept was intended to marry the two existing buildings on the lot into the previous owner’s vision of a plaza in Madrid, Spain. Heavy on its theatrical embellishments and design, its management lacked direction and discipline.
The larger building was called Café Madrid, with a small attached, wooden deck. It promised a cocktails and tapas-style menu, but many customers regarded La Zona as a lackluster pizza joint. Its tiny out-building, called St. Sophia, served churros and coffee.
The whole concept was plagued by poor food and service from the start and only briefly saved by its bar, which, along with its coveted outdoor patio, was La Zona’s most redeeming quality for a time.
