In October 2004, the Academy Award winning movie Sideways was released, and the wine business would never be the same. I started my job at Reata the following spring, and one of the first things on my “to-do” list was to work on the wine list. I chose to start with the addition of more Pinot Noirs. The movie had created quite a demand for it and estimates show a 15-20 percent increase in sales simply because of a movie. I don’t really recall any other growth like that of a restaurant item. Bourbons and whiskeys are seeing a resurgence, but nothing like the Pinot Noir growth. That was until now…..
The last couple of years have shown an absolute explosion in the craft beer scene. Session, IPA, American Black Ale, Lagers and Stouts. There is literally something out there for everyone. One of the great things that I like about the demand for craft beer is that it has now become a profitable venture for enthusiasts to get into, and we are seeing some great beers developed by some great local companies. Breweries that are located in the Fort Worth area employ Fort Worth residents and keep Fort Worth money here at home. Here are a couple of my local favorites.
Rahr Winter Warmer – This seasonal beer by Rahr is a runaway local favorite. Fritz & Erin Rahr have been brewing some great beer here in Fort Worth since 2004. They have claimed numerous nationally recognized awards and have a legion of loyal followers. They have also both been extremely instrumental in the planning of the festival, and for that I will be forever grateful.
– Someone in the beer industry recently told me that a restaurant or bar that carries this amazing American Wheat Ale might as well be printing money. This beer is flying out of bars and restaurants and recently became available by bottle as well. The Brewery is located Granbury and owned by father and son, Ron and Rhett Keisler, along with seasoned Master Brewer and Cicerone, Grant Wood.
Martin House There Will Be Stout – This Stout has more than six pounds of crushed sourdough pretzels per barrel. The saltiness of the pretzels mix well with the smooth roasted flavors. This Fort Worth Brewery recently opened by Cody and Anna Martin, David Wedemeier and Adam Myers is finding its beer placed in restaurants and bars all over North Texas.
It really doesn't matter what type of beer you like, there is going to be a craft beer that you enjoy. With the addition of so many local breweries over the last few years, there's a great chance that you will find a new favorite beer from someone making it within driving distance. The best way to find out is to simply try as many as you can! (Just not all at one time.) If you consider yourself a craft beer drinker already, I found this to help describe you. Until next week, Cheers!
