Shinjuku Station
Yes, there is good sushi in this burgers-and-barbecue town. And since it’s National Sushi Day, here are our top places to roll.
1. The Japanese Palace, located on Camp Bowie West Boulevard, was one of the first to introduce the joys of sushi and sashimi to Fort Worth diners. The indulgent sashimi sampler has thick cuts of the freshest fish — an array of salmon, tuna, yellowtail and octopus — that the sushi chef chooses nightly.
2. Chef Felipe Armenta is known for his inventive salads — the sushi salad at Pacific Table is a chopped kale creation dressed with mushrooms and marcona almonds, tossed in a miso dressing with a variety of nigiri sushi around the edge of the plate. The Pacific Roll is another favorite — a colorful display of avocado, cucumber and fresh sushi-grade fish.
3. Hatsuyuki Handroll’s namesake item comes filled with fish and sushi rice, wrapped in crispy seaweed. You never know exactly what will be the freshest chef's pick at any visit, but if you are lucky enough to stop in on a day when they are serving 00Toro (fatty blue fin tuna), dive on it. Another option is the sweet and briny uni (sea urchin).
4. A specialty that has been on Shinjuku Station's menu since the beginning is the Hokkaido scallops and tuna tartare. The raw elements rest atop a crispy lotus root with roasted rice pearls, garnished with lemon zest and julienned shiso leaves.
5. Wabi House serves a small plate version of Hama Rayu. The rosette of fresh yellow tail slices come served with a tangy mustard vinaigrette and topped with cilantro and chopped scallions, then dusted with sesame seeds.
