A North Dakota-based garage-themed restaurant that boasts menu items like a glazed donut burger — that’s right, they use a glazed donut for the bun — will open in the north end of Fort Worth in March of 2023.
The distinctively named Sickies Garage Burger and Brews is set to expand to an 8,000-square-foot garage-style restaurant in the former Posadas Café off of I-35W, at 6770 Fossil Bluff Drive next year.
So, after all of this build up, what can diners expect to see on the menu besides glazed donut buns? Well, let’s start with what the other nine Sickies restaurants are known for: 50 signature burgers and a selection of 50 brews. Top that off with an item like the Twin Cam (a burger topped with peppered bacon and nacho cheese dialed in-between two grilled cheese sandwiches for buns) and you have greasy pay dirt.
And apparently, it’s working. The establishment has locations in Bismarck and Fargo, North Dakota; Sioux Falls and Rapid City, South Dakota; Bellevue and Omaha, Nebraska; Las Vegas; and Kissimmee, Florida.
But the food isn’t the only thing that is creating a buzz around this restaurant. The aesthetic of each establishment is host to a sundry of classic cars, trucks, and motorcycles, leaving patrons with a sense that they just left a real garage.
“We [just] celebrated our 10th anniversary as a brand this year, so opening our 10th location next year in a new market is another milestone for us and we look forward to being a part of the Fort Worth community,” Scott Upton, partner at Sickies Garage & Brews says in an email.
One main question many have asked, according to a release, is where the name comes from. Apparently, the name was formed when a group of like-minded friends would meet up to tinker on their rides, get this, in a garage, and do a little grilling on the side in North Dakota. Soon after, the grilling portion of this gathering took on a life of its own, with friends and family members gathering around to try their newest creations.
Testing the newest burgers at the garage quickly became known as “Sickies Garage” — and often the reason this core group would play hooky from work by calling in “sick.” See, it all makes sense once you put the whole story together.
By the way, this group of like-minded individuals are now the owners of this business and, ironically, probably don’t take many sick days since this franchise has taken off.
Unfortunately, for those of us in Funkytown, we will have to wait a few more months before we can play hooky and grab a Twin Cam and a beer.
