Fred's on West 7th
Some restaurants have a tendency to move or shutter quietly, perhaps even making their announcement after already serving their last meal or cocktail. Others, well, they throw a big party and leave a wake of nostalgia and longing on their way out the door. Fred’s, the hamburger joint on West 7th that’s soon to move to a larger location off Camp Bowie, is in the latter category.
On New Year’s Eve, Fred’s will host a giant shindig featuring ice-cold beer, live music, and their signature menu — crossing fingers they’ve packed enough nachos for the day. Musicians slated to perform include the James Hinkle Band with special guests Claire Hinkle and Sam Anderson of Quaker City Night Hawks fame. Other activities include a photobooth and a raffle to benefit Meat Fight, a local DFW organization seeking to aid those living with multiple sclerosis — the marquee prize being an authentic bar stool from the famed café.
Festivities begin at 11 a.m. and will last past midnight (don’t forget to stay for the complimentary whiskey toast when the clock strikes 12).
Fred’s Texas Café has been at their West 7th location for 40 years — long before West 7th became the bar-crawling paradise it is today. The street practically grew up around the old wooden building with classic roof shingles; the location is now juxtaposed by a parking garage and Crockett Row. The new location is slated to open in early spring of 2022 at 7101 Camp Bowie West. Fred’s announced their move in October.
The new location promises to bring larger indoor and outdoor seating and back seasonal and specialty menu items.
