After a five-month hiatus due to COVID-19, the Tarrant Area Food Bank is taking food donations from individuals once again as part of Feeding America's Hunger Action Month — a month-long initiative to raise awareness and fight hunger in the U.S.
It's especially imperative to give during the pandemic, according to TAFB president and CEO Julie Butner. Since March, TAFB has distributed nearly 19 million meals, adding to a total of more than 33 million meals given since last October.
“With the increased need that our 13 counties are facing, the importance of strong community involvement during Hunger Action Month cannot be overstated,” TAFB president and CEO Julie Butner said in a statement. “Your participation will allow us to put food back into the community where it belongs, to those who need it most.”
Here are three ways to help:
- Donate food. TAFB is particularly asking for easy-to-make foods that kids or homebound adults can prepare — items like breakfast cereals, peanut butter, tuna, mac and cheese, and pop-top soups.
- Donate funds. TAFB is also encouraging locals to participate in North Texas Giving Day on Sept. 17, giving to the food bank via the event's website.
- Donate time. Since TAFB isn't accepting volunteers at its distribution center, the organization is asking those who wish to volunteer to participate in the food bank's weekly Mega Mobile Market, which will place every Friday through November at Herman Clark Stadium in Fort Worth. Volunteers can sign up via tafb.galaxydigital.com.
