Tacos and Tequila
Cue the opening chords of a mariachi band warming up in the alley behind your favorite taco joint. The clink of ice in a margarita glass. The buzz of streetlights flickering on as the sun dips behind the Texas horizon. And the warm, undeniable feeling that something good is about to happen. That’s the heartbeat of Texas Taco Week, back for its second year and set to run April 29 through May 5 — Cinco de Mayo, of course.
But this isn’t just about tacos. It’s about heart. Soul. And a lot of salsa.
Texas Taco Week is what happens when food becomes more than just food. When a plate of something wrapped in a warm tortilla becomes a way to connect people to causes. Created by the folks at the National Leadership Foundation — the same group that dreamed up The Greatest Gift Catalog Ever — this week-long festival is a chance for restaurants, bars, and food trucks to team up with nonprofits doing the real work: feeding the hungry, sheltering the vulnerable, lifting the unheard.
Here’s how it works: your favorite spots — from Fort Worth legends like The Bearded Lady and Del Frisco’s, to creative outliers like Fort Redemption — craft a signature taco or drink for the week. You buy it. They donate a portion of that sale to a nonprofit of their choice. And just like that, your dinner becomes a donation. Your happy hour becomes hope.
In 2024, it started with just Fort Worth. But this year, the dream is bigger. Statewide. Because everything’s bigger in Texas, including the desire to do good with a side of guac.
The matchups are poetic. Chefs picking causes that hit close to home. Nonprofits are getting the exposure — and support — they deserve. Want to help kids? Veterans? The environment? There’s a taco for that.
Right now, there are 11 merchants signed on. That number is growing, and fast. And whether you’re a chef, a server, a nonprofit rep, or just someone who really loves tacos (and honestly, who doesn’t?), there’s room at the table.
Check out www.TexasTacoWeek.com for more information. Merchants and nonprofits can still register — because every taco has a story, and every story deserves a chance to be heard.
So mark your calendars. Bring your appetite. And maybe — just maybe — wear something with a little stretch. Texas Taco Week is back, and this time, it’s not just a party. It’s a purpose
