Whiskey Riot
It started with 700 people, a snowy night, and a hope-soaked bottle of bourbon. No big sponsors. No splashy marketing. Just Bobby Finan, a distiller from Buffalo, New York, with a dream — and a borrowed event space.
Eight years later, that dream has become Whiskey Riot, one of the country's premier tasting festivals for the whiskey curious and connoisseurs alike. And now, for the first time ever, it’s riding into Fort Worth like a barrel-aged outlaw with something to prove.
“I mean, there just hadn’t been anything like it in Buffalo,” said Finan. “It went totally viral on social media. We didn’t even advertise — and 700 people showed up. That’s when I realized: we have something here.”
Something, indeed. What began as a scrappy one-off event to promote his small-batch bourbon has become a cross-country celebration of America’s most storied spirit. Whiskey Riot has hit major metros across the U.S., and on May 24, 2025, it’ll uncork its inaugural Fort Worth edition — bringing more than 200 whiskeys, industry insiders, master distillers, and expertly crafted cocktails to The Social Space at 205 S. Calhoun Street. The event runs from 3 to 7 p.m., with early access starting at 3 p.m. and general admission beginning at 4 p.m.
But Finan never intended to be the face of a whiskey movement.
“I owned a small distillery in Buffalo for 10 years. The original idea was just to showcase what we were making,” he said. “Then COVID hit. And honestly, I started looking at Texas.”
He credits a Dallas-based friend with helping him test the waters, launching the festival’s Texas chapter in 2022. The response was immediate. “Texas really embraced it with open arms,” Finan said. “Now we’re in every major city. Fort Worth is the final piece.”
Why now? Why Cowtown?
“It’s funny,” Finan said. “You mentioned the ‘Yellowstone Effect’? My wife and I talk about that all the time. But honestly, it came down to data. Fort Worth is one of the fastest-growing metro areas in Texas — and when we asked our brand partners where they wanted us to go next, Fort Worth was the overwhelming answer.”
There’s also the undeniable magnetism of the city’s spirit — both in the bottle and in its bones.
“Fort Worth already has a really strong whiskey community,” Finan said. “You can see it in the bourbon and scotch Facebook groups, the local stores, the affinity clubs. We’re not here to change that — we’re here to contribute to it.”
The format is simple, but far from ordinary: each Whiskey Riot event offers unlimited tastings from dozens of brands (this year’s Fort Worth lineup features 50 companies, many with multiple labels in tow), signature cocktails, and the chance to meet distillers and reps who actually know their stuff.
“We’re not bringing in hired guns who just pour,” Finan said. “We want people who can answer questions like, ‘What’s the difference between bourbon and rye?’ and give context — who can tell the founder’s story, explain the barrel aging, and get you excited.”
The mission? Keep it fun. Make it educational. And above all, make it real.
“We say it’s for the whiskey curious,” Finan continued. “We’re not chasing the guy with a $10,000 bottle collection in his basement. We’re looking for people who want to explore, discover, and learn.”
Still, he’s not naive about the industry’s current climate. Oversupply is real. So is the consumer shift toward quality over quantity.
“There was this idea that the growth rate would just continue forever,” he said. “Now, we’re seeing distilleries like Wild Turkey add age statements to their entry-level bottles. That’s a win for the consumer. You’re getting older whiskey, more mature and robust, at a better price.”
He pauses for a beat.
“That’s the silver lining in all of this. The industry’s correcting — but the people who care about whiskey, they’re still here. Maybe they’re drinking less, but they’re drinking better.”
Finan is one of those people. Despite his business expanding nationally, he remains a fan first. And when he’s not organizing festivals or sampling spirits, he’s chasing adrenaline — literally.
“I’m a mountain biker and a skier,” he shares. “My wife pulls her hair out because the stuff I like is so steep and rocky. But I love it. That edge-of-your-seat feeling? It’s the same reason I love whiskey. It wakes you up. It makes you feel alive.”
That philosophy, distilled, is exactly what Finan is bringing to Fort Worth this May. A little bit outlaw. A little bit educator. And a whole lot of spirit.
“It’s not about getting drunk,” he said. “It’s about discovery, about sharing something meaningful with people who give a damn. And Fort Worth? They give a damn.”
