Funky Picnic
A group of award-winning home brewers are finally sharing their concoctions with the rest of us.
Funky Picnic Brewery & Café will open to the public in June, with a grand opening scheduled later that month. Located at 401 Bryan Ave., Funky Picnic is a project by founders Samantha Glenn, Collin Zreet, Jenni Hanley, John Koch and Michael Harper, who serves as head brewer.
Originally named The Fort Brewing Company — trademark disputes spoiled that branding and forced a change — the now-Funky Picnic shares the same building as Black Cat Pizza but with separate entrances on South Main Street. Funky Picnic will be joining many of Fort Worth's favorite beer brands in the surrounding neighborhood like Rahr & Sons Brewing Company, Wild Acre Brewery, HopFusion Ale Works and The Collective Brewing Project.
The craft brewery will serve sandwiches as well, prepared by Josh Rangel, who worked briefly in the kitchen at Waters Restaurant before moving on to stints at two restaurants, Dive Oyster Bar and La Perla — both of which are now closed.
The layout will have a casual feel with small tables, couches and a long wooden bar with stool seating, nestled next to a bank of paned-glass windows, overlooking the brew house.
Funky Picnic plans a lineup of beers, from a pilsner and a kolsch to IPAs and a stout. Says co-owner Samantha Glenn, the brewery also plans to add more inventive beers like a prickly pear saison and a Belgian triple.
