January 16 marks that time of year when we commemorate, honor, and celebrate the life, legacy, and impact of the late Martin Luther King Jr. And what better way to honor his memory than to give back to the community? For those of you who do have the time and want to help pay it forward in MLK Jr’s honor, here’s a list of volunteer opportunities happening around the city on Monday.
38th Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Parade and Rally - Celebrate the legacy and impact of Martin Luther King Jr. at this annual downtown parade highlighting community unity and a commitment to justice for all humankind. The parade concludes with a rally in Sundance Square — connect with local organizations helping to keep the dream alive. 11:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.
True Worth Place – Serve meals to hundreds of people per day, help teach classes, and help guests apply online in order to get back on their feet.
Trinity Habitat for Humanity – Help build and repair homes for people in need. No construction experience is necessary.
YMCA – This opportunity allows you to fit in time to help that also fits with your schedule. YMCA volunteers can help mentor youth, coach sports activities, and help distribute food when needed.
Crowley House of Hope - Take part in food pantry operations, sort and organize donations in the thrift store, and assist with tasks that make a difference for neighbors in need. Register in advance (contact info at the link). 10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.
MLK Day of Service - Volunteer Arlington has organized all sorts of group-effort community service projects Monday, January 16. Right now, there are about 20 projects on the list. Register for one that resonates with you. Everyone will meet at Washinton-Liberty High School in the morning, then either head off-site or stay to work on projects that will be set up at the school. 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
Zeb Strong Jr. Day of Service - Mission Arlington has a list of community assignments for anyone wanting to get involved in this area. Be sure to print and fill out the registration form at the link beforehand. The first 500 volunteers will receive a commemorative t-shirt. Check out all the events scheduled for 2023 Advancing the Dream Celebration weekend, including talent showcases, a festival, and more. 9:00 a.m.
