International WeLoveU Foundation
In response to Carter BloodCare's call for more donors as the center experiences one of its worst blood shortages in decades, athletic footwear retailer WSS and nonprofit International WeLoveU Foundation hosted a blood drive Sunday at AT&T Stadium, hoping to make it the largest in Texas.
Well, they did it.
According to WeLoveU, the event collected over 1,000 pints of blood — enough to save more than 3,000 lives — making it the largest single-day blood drive ever in Texas. The previous record was 900 pints of blood.
WeLoveU volunteers traveled from as far as Chicago, Los Angeles, New York, and Washington, D.C., to give blood. Even notable names like Jerry Jones Jr., executive vice president and chief sales and marketing officer for the Dallas Cowboys, extended their arms to donate.
Arlington Mayor Jeff Williams declared April 11 as WeLoveU Day to commemorate the breaking of the state record.
Sunday's blood drive marked the "grand finale" of WeLoveU's three-month-long National Blood Drive Campaign. Other supporters of the event included Baylor Scott & White Health, Papa John’s Pizza, and the Dallas Cowboys.
