A series of locomotives built to haul heavy freight during World War II have all but faded into the annals of history. Today, these giant behemoths seem out of place in today’s Electric Vehicle craze. All but one of these massive relics of the 1940s industrial age is still running – the Big Boy No. 4014.
Out of the eight Big Boy steam locomotives that still exist today, No. 4014 is the only one that still gets around. And if you’ve never seen this massive testament to a bygone era, your chance to witness its grandeur in person just happens to be this week.
This moving giant will be on display at 275 W. Lancaster Ave. In downtown Fort Worth at the T&P Station on Oct. 10 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and on Oct. 11 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
To celebrate the 150th anniversary of the transcontinental railroad’s completion, the No. 4014 Big Boy steam locomotive was restored back to its original glory in 2019. This steel behemoth measures 132 feet long and weighs a whopping 1.2 million pounds. Following behind this massive engine is a special train of Amour Yellow executive cars.
Although only eight of these locomotives still exist, a total of 25 were built to haul heavy freight during World War II. The other seven are in stationary exhibits around the country.
The Big Boy No. 4014’s appearance in Cowtown is part of Union Pacific’s Heartland of America Tour, which includes several stops in more than a dozen communities and 10 states. In fact, the Big Boy No. 4014 will already have passed through seven states by the time it hits Fort Worth.
This display is free and open to the public; however, the City of Fort Worth along with Union Pacific officials say the site will be limited in accordance with capacity limits set by both entities. In other words, prepare yourself for long lines and extended standing periods, since there will be no seating available.
“We believe people will be able to get a good look at this extraordinary steam locomotive in about 30 minutes, with plenty of time to take photos,” according to Union Pacific organizers. “Due to the capacity limits, we encourage people to be respectful and mindful of time, allowing as many people in to see Big Boy as possible.”
