CANstruction
BOKA Powell Architects entry of Marvel character Groot in the 21st annual CANstruction competition benefiting Tarrant Area Food Bank.
Eye-popping displays each year are designed to focus attention on hunger in the area and inspire the community to join forces and conquer it — one can at a time.
The annual CANstruction Competition, a unique sculpture-design contest, involves Fort Worth chapters of the American Institute of Architects and the Society for Design Administration, teamed up to help those in need. Marvel comic characters are this year’s inspiration.
Now in its 21st year, CANstruction is on display from Monday, Sept. 30 through Sunday, Oct. 13 at North East Mall in Hurst. The display is near Dick's Sporting Goods and in the Center Court area, near Macy’s, during regular mall hours.
CANstruction is a design competition in which participants, including many local architecture firms, create structures built entirely of canned and packaged foods. It showcases the ingenuity of the design and construction industry while focusing on tangible ways to combat hunger and hopefully encouraging viewers to action.
All sculptures are donated to Tarrant Area Food Bank at the end of the viewing, serving 13 North Texas counties. Viewing is free with a $5 donation to cast vote. Guests are encouraged to show their support by donating online to the Tarrant Area Food Bank.
