The PGA Tour is ready to get back in the swing, just not so soon. And not with a crowd of fans quietly cheering on the side.
The PGA Tour announced Thursday that it’ll restart in June with the Charles Schwab Challenge at Fort Worth’s Colonial Country Club. The tournament, originally scheduled for May 18 – 24, will now take place June 8 – 14 and with no spectators.
“The health and safety of all associated with the PGA Tour and our global community continues to be our No. 1 priority, and our hope is to play a role — responsibly — in the world’s return to enjoying the things we love,” PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan said in a statement.
The Charles Schwab Challenge is one of four PGA Tour events that will take place without fans, the others being the RBC Heritage (June 15 – 21), the Travelers Championship (June 22 – 28), and the Rocket Mortgage Classic (July 2 – 5). According to a news release, the PGA Tour will continue to monitor the COVID-19 pandemic and follow state and local recommendations to keep everyone involved healthy.
Additionally, the PGA Tour plans to increase the field sizes of three tournaments to give other members opportunity to play. The Charles Schwab Challenge, then, will increase from 120 players to 144.
“Today’s announcement is another positive step for our fans and players as we look toward the future,” Monahan said. “But as we’ve stressed on several occasions, we will resume competition only when — working closely with our tournaments, partners and communities — it is considered safe to do so under the guidance of the leading public health authorities.”
