Ed Schollmaier
Ed Schollmaier — former CEO of Alcon Laboratories, Inc., TCU donor, and the namesake of the university's basketball facility — died Thursday at the age of 87.
His cause of death has not yet been disclosed.
Ed Schollmaier and his late wife, Rae, were avid philanthropists through their Schollmaier Foundation. Ed Schollmaier was particularly involved with TCU, serving as a trustee since 1996 and chairing the Building and Grounds Committee, as well as serving in various other committees. He was also a member of the Neeley School International Board of Visitors and the recipient of Neeley's Ike Harrison Award.
The Schollmaiers donated the $10 million lead gift for the $72 million renovation of TCU's formerly Daniel-Meyer Coliseum, which opened in 2015 and hence took their name.
Outside TCU, Ed Schollmaier served on the executive committee of the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra.
In a statement first published in the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, TCU chancellor Victor Boschini said, “On behalf of the Horned Frog family, we are profoundly saddened by the passing of our mentor and friend, Ed Schollmaier. Ed was truly a visionary for the future of Texas Christian University, which had a profound and lasting impact on the TCU campus and community. He was a driving force in our expansion and deserves the credit for many of the advancements made in our physical footprint over the past few decades. Many people are familiar with his and his late wife Rae’s most public-facing contribution, the gift that led to the naming of the Schollmaier Arena."
