Tarrant County Furniture Bank
Tarrant County Furniture Bank, open as of Aug. 14, provides new or gently-used furniture to those transitioning out of homelessness.
You’ve heard of (and hopefully supported or volunteered at) the Tarrant Area Food Bank, one of the area’s means of fighting hunger in the community. Now, there’s a new facility addressing another need ― The Tarrant County Furniture Bank.
The charitable organization, open as of Aug. 14, provides new or gently-used furniture to those transitioning out of homelessness. Last week, Mayor Betsy Price and others attended the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the furniture bank.
The need is real, according to Fort Worth’s Directions Home program, which aims to reduce homelessness in Fort Worth. Advocates are struggling to furnish at least 10 households every week for those who are transitioning out of homelessness. Many of those transitioning have no beds, dining tables, or living room furniture.
Clients are served on a referral and appointment basis only, says Teresa Huskey, founder and executive director. “The Tarrant County Furniture Bank does not take walk-ins, but will accept referrals through a network of social services agencies and nonprofit organizations that enroll to work directly with the furniture bank,” Huskey says.
Tarrant County Furniture Bank will initially serve Fort Worth, but staff plan to expand services into all of Tarrant County. The furniture bank will depend on donations from residents, the furniture industry, businesses, and hotels to keep its warehouse stocked.
Have something to donate? Donations can be dropped off by appointment at 2550 McMillan Parkway, formerly the Coors Distributing Co. Pickup can be arranged by appointment for donors who do not have delivery capability, usually on Saturdays.
