A high-five is in order for TCU basketball coach Jamie Dixon, who collected career win No. 500 on Wednesday in the Horned Frogs’ 65-60 victory over West Virginia on Wednesday evening at Schollmaier Arena.
Dixon is the 23rd active coach to reach 500 career wins. He's also the seventh active coach to have won all 500 games with a major conference team. Dixon has coached in the Big East, ACC, and Big 12.
“ACC, Big East and Big 12 … didn’t get a lot of them in easy games, that’s for sure,” the coach said during impromptu remarks during his postgame news conference. “I’ve been lucky. I’ve been at two great schools. I’ve had a lot of great players. I’ve been lucky to do what I’ve wanted to do my whole life.”
With TCU’s next victory — the Frogs next play at No. 8 Iowa State on Saturday morning — Dixon will match the win totals of three other longtime coaches — Ron Hunter, Ed Martin, and Billy Donovan. The Frogs are 12-10 overall and 5-6 in the Big 12.
Mike Krzyzewski, the Duke Hall of Fame coach, has more victories than any other men’s NCAA Division I coach with 1,202, followed by Jim Boeheim, Bob Huggins, Jim Calhoun, and Roy Williams.
Dixon began his remarks by saying he hadn’t given the milestone much thought because something else was on his mind — the year anniversary of the death of his father, Jim.
“It’s kind of a bittersweet day,” Dixon said. “That’s kind of the thing that’s more on my mind, if I have to be honest with you. I guess I’m a little emotional, but it’s not the 500 wins.”
Dixon ranks second all-time at TCU in men’s basketball victories with 172.
Buster Brannon is the winningest — is that a word? — men's basketball coach with 205 victories. Brannon, like Dixon, was a TCU alum. He played both football and basketball, starring as quarterback and a standout, All-SWC guard in basketball from 1931-33. Brannon coached at Rice before a prosperous career at his alma mater.
