John Wayne was no stranger to a fight, on-screen or off. His namesake foundation has brought that same determination to Fort Worth with the John Wayne Grit Series 5K, a recurring race through the historic Stockyards that raises money in the battle against cancer.
On Saturday, Nov. 8, the Grit Series returns to Cowtown for another edition of a race that feels as much like a Western festival as it does a charity run. The event has become a local tradition, with previous races held on Nov. 12, 2022, and Nov. 9, 2024. Participants will lace up for a morning course that winds past brick streets, weathered saloons, and a whole lotta history — with the Duke’s spirit riding shotgun every step of the way.
That spirit runs deep in the foundation’s story. After beating lung cancer in 1964, John Wayne faced another round with stomach cancer years later, a fight he ultimately lost. His family carried his determination forward, launching the John Wayne Cancer Foundation to fund research, education, and patient support programs. Today, every mile run in his name helps fuel that mission.
Still, this isn’t your average weekend 5K. The Stockyards setting promises live Western entertainment, cowboy-themed festivities, and a finish-line celebration that includes samples of Duke Spirits bourbon and Wayne Family Estates wines — plus a cold beer from Revolver Brewing Co. to wash it all down. Every runner or walker gets a commemorative shirt and finisher’s mug, with extra rewards for those who fundraise.
Registration is now open, and spots will fill up quickly. Whether you run solo, rally your coworkers, or wrangle the family, the Stockyards 5K is a chance to celebrate Texas toughness and raise money for a cause that demands it.
In November, Fort Worth will once again prove what John Wayne always knew — courage and determination aren’t just words, they’re a way of life.
