The National Women's History Museum (NWHM) will shine a light on four extraordinary visionaries who’ve redefined success, reimagined industries, and blazed trails for generations to come on March 20. The Women Making History Awards Gala is a testament to the power of women who break barriers, inspire change, and leave their mark on the world.
This year’s honorees? A group that reads like a who's who of change-makers: Sara Blakely, Dr. Opal Lee, Shirley Welsh Ryan, and Mattel's Lisa McKnight. Together, they embody the spirit of innovation, social justice, and the relentless pursuit of bettering the world. And to mark this unforgettable night, one of Hollywood’s finest will be joining the cause. Oscar-winning actress Meryl Streep will serve as the honorary chair, with CBS News anchor Norah O'Donnell at the helm as the event's host.
Each honoree is a force in their own right.
Sara Blakely, the visionary behind Spanx and Sneex, built an empire from the ground up. A self-made billionaire, Blakely’s influence stretches beyond the world of fashion. Her authenticity, playful nature, and commitment to elevating women have made her an icon in the entrepreneurial world. She’s climbed hot air balloons, made pancakes in shapes only a child could dream of, and pledged half of her wealth to philanthropy—an incredible testament to her heart as much as her mind.
Then there’s Dr. Opal Lee. Known as the “Grandmother of Juneteenth,” Dr. Lee's tireless efforts to bring recognition to Juneteenth as a federal holiday have earned her admiration worldwide. Her fight is a perfect example of how one voice — no matter the age — can spark a movement. With honorary doctorates and a seat at the table of historic national conversations, Dr. Lee continues to push for justice, equality, and recognition for the African American community.
ShirleyWelsh Ryan, an innovator in infant neuroplasticity and child development, is another honoree who’s dedicated her life to helping others. Through Pathways.org, which she founded, Shirley has brought attention to the early detection and treatment of movement, speech, and sensory delays in infants. Her relentless pursuit of change has reshaped how we approach healthcare for the most vulnerable, improving lives and creating more accessible futures for children around the world.
And then, there's Mattel—a company that has shaped the childhoods of millions. Known for its groundbreaking brands like Barbie, Hot Wheels, and Fisher-Price, Mattel’s legacy is one of empowering future generations. Under the leadership of Lisa McKnight, Mattel has spearheaded initiatives like the Barbie Dream Gap Project, leveling the playing field for girls around the world. Mattel is the recipient of the inaugural Evelyn Y. Davis Women Making History Corporate Changemaker Award, named after the late Davis, a corporate trailblazer known for her commitment to transparency, gender equity, and inclusion.
As the evening unfolds, the gala will include live performances, and a special moment that promises to move all in attendance—a debut of the inaugural NWHM anthem, written by Grammy-winning artist Tena Clark.
“It’s an honor to celebrate these remarkable individuals, whose legacies will live on for generations,” said Susan D. Whiting, Chair of the NWHM Board of Directors in a statement. "Each of them has left an indelible mark on society, and we are privileged to recognize them for their extraordinary contributions."
