Fort Worth loves a good comeback story, and for the Riverside neighborhood, the annual Race on Race Street has become exactly that. What began as a local fitness challenge four years ago has quickly grown into one of the city’s signature community events — a celebration of strength, endurance, and the deep-rooted pride that defines this pocket of East Fort Worth.
On Saturday, Oct. 11, the streets of Riverside will once again fill with runners of every stripe: kids in sneakers sprinting the one-mile fun run, weekend warriors grinding through the half-marathon, and a brand-new addition this year — a 5K ruck run that adds a weighted pack to the challenge.
"We're in the final stretch now, and the excitement is building," said Ron Green, health and wellness coach and owner of PT Fitness. "Whether you're putting the finishing touches on your training or deciding to jump in at the last minute, there's still time to be part of something special in our community."
The course itself is part of the draw. Starting on Race Street in front of PT Fitness, runners head toward the Trinity River, where the skyline of downtown Fort Worth rises in the distance. The path winds through the shaded greenbelt of East Fort Worth, past wildlife and quiet stretches of riverbank, before looping back to the bustle of vendor alley — a street fair of local shops, restaurants, and neighborhood coffeehouses waiting at the finish.
"The Race on Race Street is a wonderful showcase for District 11 and the historic Riverside neighborhood," said Jeanette Martinez, Fort Worth City Council Member for District 11. "This part of our city has such a rich history and unique character, from the beautiful Trinity River corridor to the local businesses that give Race Street its authentic charm. Events like this give Fort Worth residents from across the city a chance to discover what many of us already know: that east Fort Worth is full of hidden gems and incredible community spirit.”
And show up they do. Runners now travel from across Texas — and beyond — to test themselves in Riverside, lending the race a reputation that’s outgrown its grassroots beginnings. For locals, though, it’s still about neighborhood pride and the kind of camaraderie that only comes from sweating side by side down familiar streets.
Registration is open until race day, though organizers note that some categories are filling fast. And even if you’re not running, Race Street offers plenty of reasons to come cheer: shop the boutiques, grab a plate from a food truck, or sip coffee with the locals who make this corner of Fort Worth feel like home.
