United Way of Tarrant County (UWTC) has announced Adam Powell as its new president and CEO, effective January 13, 2025. Powell, a seasoned nonprofit executive with over 20 years of experience, is recognized for his strategic leadership and ability to drive community impact, according to a release. He succeeds Leah M. King, who resigned in October.
“Adam’s nonprofit experience and his proven track record of delivering results will be invaluable as we continue to innovate and grow,” Steve Bobb, chair of the UWTC board said in a statement. “We are excited for his ability to engage with stakeholders across Tarrant County and secure the investments needed to advance our mission.”
Powell joins UWTC from Communities in Schools of the Dallas Region, where he served as president and CEO and grew the organization’s impact and revenue significantly. His past roles include vice president of site operations at College Possible and COO of Education is Freedom. He began his nonprofit career as a resident assistant at Arlington’s Life Shelter in 2007.
Powell is a recognized leader in the nonprofit sector, having been inducted into the Forbes Nonprofit Council and named a finalist for the D Magazine “D CEO Leadership Excellence Award” in 2024 and 2023. He was also named to the Dallas Business Journal’s “40 Under 40” list in 2021.
Powell holds a B.S. in mass communications from Jackson State University, an M.S. in social work from the University of Texas at Arlington and is expected to complete his Ed.D. in leadership and innovation from Purdue University in December 2025.
“I am honored to join United Way of Tarrant County, an organization with a legacy of making a positive difference,” Powell said. “Returning to Tarrant County, where I began my Texas nonprofit career, makes this opportunity even more meaningful.”
