Fort Worth's historic PGA Tour tournament held annually at the Colonial Country Club for over 70 years has changed its name — again.
The tournament will be called the Charles Schwab Challenge, with Charles Schwab as the title sponsor. The company signed a four-year agreement that will begin in 2019.
For 69 years, the name of the event had “Colonial” in its name until it was renamed the Dean & DeLuca Invitational for the 2016-2017 seasons. After Dean & DeLuca backed out of its six-year agreement, just two years in, the 2018 event was renamed the Fort Worth Invitational to much excitement.
Traditionally hosted over Memorial Day weekend, the annual event is the longest-tenured tournament at a single venue for the PGA Tour.
The Fort Worth tournament is a PGA Tour leader in charitable giving — breaking a record in 2018 with $13 million awarded to charities. In the past two decades, the tournament has awarded $100 million to more than 150 charitable organizations.
Since its inaugural tournament in 1946, the tournament has represented a wide range of professional golfers, including legends like Ben Hogan, Phil Mickelson, and Jordan Spieth. This year, Justin Rose was the title champion.
"Greatness is achieved through challenge,” Rob Hood, Charles Schwab Challenge tournament chairman, said in a statement. “Colonial has challenged the world's greatest golfers for over three quarters of a century. The tournament title – Charles Schwab Challenge – certainly celebrates our long history of great competition."
