A neighborhood in South Fort Worth is not just getting a new bridge — it's getting a new piece of public art.
The pedestrian bridge, which will be 62 feet long and 14 feet wide, will be built in the 4800-5000 blocks of Westcreek Drive.
The bridge is being built to provide pedestrians easier accessibility between the Westcreek Drive walking path and the Trinity Trials (via Kellis Park, Foster Park and Overton Park).
Fort Worth City Council unanimously approved a contract Tuesday with architect Volkan Alkanoglu of Volkan Alkanoglu DESIGN, LLC, for the installation of the bridge. The project costs a little over $300,000.
Alkanoglu's project, entitled “Drift,” will be made from laminated Spanish Cedar and treated with clear and anti-graffiti coating. The inspiration for the design comes from the formations of the creek and mid-century neighborhood architecture, transforming from a geometric form to an organic shape. The center of the bridge will widen for pedestrians to sit, relax and enjoy the view.
The bridge is expected to be installed in September or October.
