Lone Star Film Festival
A badge at Lone Star Film Festival gets you, in a word, everything.
Take a moment to consider all the perks that come with an all-access badge to Fort Worth’s annual Lone Star Film Festival if you’re on the fence. That badge gets you, in a word, everything: all five days, 140-plus films with priority seating, film talks with industry pros, daily happy hours, coffee with filmmakers and plenty more.
The list goes on, and while it’s hard to narrow down highlights, here’s a selection of don’t-miss happenings for which cinephiles will want to reserve Nov. 13 to 17.
1. Acclaimed actor Tim Blake Nelson talks movies, achievements and an upcoming role
Fort Worth will play host to GRAMMY award winner Tim Blake Nelson, best known for his roles in “The Ballad of Buster Scruggs,” “O Brother, Where Art Thou?”, and “Watchmen.” Nelson arrives at Lone Star Film Festival to discuss his starring role in “Just Mercy,” the story of a prominent civil rights defense attorney, portrayed by Michael B. Jordan, who fights to free a condemned death row prisoner, played by Jamie Foxx.
Expect to also see Nelson at the annual Lone Star Film Festival Gala, in which he’ll be bestowed with the Bill Paxton Achievement Award.
2. Netflix and Blockbuster executives give the skinny on the current state of the TV and film industry
Netflix and former Blockbuster executives, in a first, will meet in Fort Worth to trade business war stories and offer first-hand accounts on founding and managing companies that molded modern entertainment.
Lone Star Film Festival boasts the world premiere of “Netflix vs. the World,” and executives will elaborate on what they learned while making the film.
3. Texas-based directors and producers gather in legion
Award-winning films from 19 countries will be showcased at the festival. But the annual event continues to draw an impressive lineup of films from Texas-based directors and producers, as well.
They include Terrence Malick’s “A Hidden Life,” the story of an Austrian man who refuses to fight for the Nazis during World War II. “Sleeping in Plastic,” the story of a Texas high school wrestler who finds himself entangled with a drifter and her psychotic lover, adds to the lineup, being produced by Fort Worth-based Red Productions.
4. Land inside the terrifying world of “American Horror Story" through a virtual reality experience
Who says spooky season is over? The festival is partnering with Dallas-based creative technology company, Groove Jones, to bring FX Networks’ “American Horror Story” Virtual Reality Experience to Fort Worth.
Be warned — the experience has garnered over 200 million social media impressions and won a Shorty Award for best VR experience of the year.
5. Fort Worthian filmmaker Rambo Elliott, UT Southwestern spotlight mental health
Funkytown’s own Rambo Elliott joins Dr. Madhukar Trivedi of UT Southwestern Center for Depression Research & Clinical Care and M2G Co-Founder Jessica Miller to discuss “The Bridge.” The short film tells the story of a girl who struggles with repression, anxiety, and depression throughout a 20-year period.
Panelists will discuss the use of film as a catalyst for social change and awareness, alongside its effect on mental health.
