Friday night lights, prom, homecoming courts, and band practice – it’s just about the end of an era in your child’s life. Preserving these moments through photography is not only a special experience for them – it’s a fantastic collection of memories for you both to cherish forever.
Kerri Brookins, owner and founder of Kerri Brookins Photography provides some valuable advice on being prepared to take your senior portraits. These tips may have seniors in mind, but you might find them useful for engagement photos, family photos, headshots, even bridal portraits.
Kerri is extremely passionate about giving high school seniors the best experience possible. “I was passionate when I started years ago, and I’m even more passionate today,” Kerri says.
When Kerri was a young child, portraits weren’t an option. She recalls being a little girl and not having the opportunity to have her portraits taken. “Every summer, my ‘mema’ would tell stories of her childhood. I remember I’d close my eyes and try to imagine how she looked when she was a girl, there weren’t many portraits then. It's not surprising that my journey has led me to where I am today.” She recognizes that photography and getting portraits taken is a privilege. She also believes it’s a worthy investment in your child’s life. It’s something they will carry with them for the rest of their lives.

Without further ado, here is what you should wear and how to prepare for your senior session:
1. Choose a variety of styles.
Some photographers might limit how many outfits you can wear. Kerri Brookins allows up to five outfits for senior sessions.
2. Stick to solids.
If you can, choose solids over print. Patterns tend to distract the eye and sometimes compete for attention in portraits. The focus should, of course, be on your senior.
3. Let the outfit decide.
Once your child has an outfit selected, Kerri can choose a location that matches the look. You may consider wearing jeans or shorts instead of a formal gown to the Fort Worth Water Gardens, for example.
4. Eyebrow and facial waxing before the photoshoot.
To avoid looking red in portraits, it’s highly recommended that you plan to get this appointment taken care of a few weeks in advance.
5. Use a good lip balm.
Chapped lips do not photograph well. It’s best to start moisturizing lips at least a week early. This is for guys and gals alike.
