Trinity Terrace Residents Give Back with Monthly Fundraiser

Proceeds benefit the senior living community's staff through scholarships and gifts

Jeannie Chaffee and Suzie Leggio are residents at Trinity Terrace, a not-for-profit, resident-centered retirement community that’s served Fort Worth seniors for over 100 years.

They spend their days participating in exciting activities like exercise classes, ballroom dancing lessons, fine dining, and a wealth of first-class amenities at their fingertips. If they need their hair styled, linens pressed, or a lightbulb changed, the staff at Trinity Terrace is there to help. And to thank the hardworking employees, residents like Jeannie and Suzie chair the community’s Gifts, Memorials, and Scholarships Committee as a way to give back.

“It is a wonderful place to live,” Jeannie says.

The committee hosts a monthly “white elephant” event. It’s a secondhand sale where residents donate various gently used items — like fine china, housewares, clothes, or tools — for the community to shop. Proceeds from the event go directly back into a fund that organizes scholarships and gifts for staff members.

“We find glassware that's handblown,” Suzie says of the items for sale at the event. “We find crystal that was someone's grandmother's. It's really a great treasure hunt.”

While the sale is currently limited to staff and residents due to COVID-19 restrictions, they hope to invite the public as soon as it’s safe.

Ruby Ramirez is a Trinity Terrace dining services employee and scholarship recipient. She says the money she received from the scholarship fund paid for nearly half of her tuition at The University of North Texas each semester.

“I’m the oldest in my family,” she says. “I didn't want to put the burden on my parents to help me. They had other kids to worry about, so the scholarship really helped. I'm really thankful for it.”

Ramirez graduated with honors last April with a graphic design degree. Even though she’s currently looking for a new job in her field, she’ll remember her time at Trinity Terrace fondly.

“The residents become our second family,” Ramirez says.

Trinity Terrace first originated in 1897 as a retirement community in Arlington Heights, spearheaded by Taylor Street Cumberland Presbyterian Church Reverend A.B. Buchanan. Originally named The Cumberland Rest, it’s since changed locations and grown to an established luxury senior living community with nearly 400 residents and three high-rise towers in the heart of downtown Fort Worth.
