What he teaches: Physics and Robo Vikes robotics team coach
How long he's taught: 23 years, at the college and secondary school levels. Thirteen years at Nolan
Education: Bachelor of science, mechanical engineering, Duke University, PhD, materials science and engineering, University of Utah
Why he teaches: I enjoy working with students to find their passion. I hope to form industry leaders.
How he connects with students: Our students are the future leaders of technology and business in our community, state, country, and the world, and they must learn to work together despite differences, to find the most practical and ethical solution to our problems. Our students learn to work collaboratively with both peers and professionals. I strive to empower students to make decisions for the good of the team's community. They work in a student led environment served and guided by experienced, adult mentors. The involvement of industry professionals in the areas of technology, marketing, leadership, design, writing, and public speaking helps to create a hearty environment for learning not available in a typical classroom or club setting.
Why he's a Top Teacher: Scheer created a nationally competitive robotics team at Nolan, “fostering creative thinking, teamwork and project-based learning, while building relationships with multiple national and international technology companies and engineering companies,” Erin Vader, the principal and one of Scheer’s nominators, says. “He works with students in such a way as to encourage independent thought and intellectual inquiry. His students are leaders inside and outside the classroom.”
