Dana Vollmer set a world record while winning a gold medal at the 2012 Olympics in London. The Granbury-raised swimmer became the first female to break the 56-second barrier with an impressive time of 55.98 seconds in the 100-meter butterfly.
After the first 50 meters, Vollmer was actually in third place. She burst into full gear for the final 50 and pushed ahead of the pack to win.
Vollmer credits her coach, Teri McKeever, her husband and parents, who all came to London from Granbury, for their steadfast support
This extraordinary swimmer overcame two heart defects as a teen and qualified for the Olympic team in 2008. In the 2004 Olympics, her mother and members of the USA Swimming medical staff carried defibrillators in case of an emergency.
There is no doubt that her hometown is proud. The municipal pool in Granbury is named in her honor. -FWTX Staff
