When Wendy Wilkie was diagnosed with cancer in 1999, she fought the disease with every means at her disposal - including using food to help heal and prolong her quality of life. She started Cuisine for Healing to make nutritious, delicious food readily available to others fighting disease.
Wilkie lost her fight in August of 2008, but her passion lives on in the non-profit.
Cuisine for Healing and Texas Toast Culinary Tours are holding the second annual Dinner Party for Life Sunday, June 24, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Fort Worth Community Arts Center, 1300 Gendy St. Eight top area chefs will prepare the menu and wine pairings. Tickets are $125 and limited in number.
"We're not in the fundraising business, but we enjoy helping out with cuisine-driven events and the mission of this particular organization hits close to home," said June Naylor, partner with Cynthia Wahl in Texas Toast Culinary Tours.
"Unfortunately, not everyone who faces cancer has a family support system in place to assist them on this frightening journey," said Honorary Chair Rosie Moncrief.
She's dedicating her effort this year to Netty Matthews of the Fort Worth Chamber of Commerce, a "dear friend who has fought a courageous fight with great resolve and dignity," Moncrief said.
To date, the organization has delivered more than 15,000 meals to lower income households in the Tarrant County area.
"To have them in their refrigerator when they are unable to drive, shop or cook was a reoccurring statement and wish of Wendy's," said Sue Austin, president of Cuisine for Healing.
