After a long selection, application and production process, ArtSouth will be open to the public on Oct. 2.
ArtSouth choses one artist each quarter to have his or her work displayed for the public. ArtSouth provides this selected artist with a temporary exhibition space as well as a studio space and a project stipend.
Jay Wilkinson, the first ArtSouth selected artist, often works with found objects to create sculptures that display social justice issues within our local community. Before Wilkinson was awarded this residency, he created several murals in Near Southside and throughout Fort Worth.
The ArtSouth selection committee, made up of local artists, property owners and art professionals, chose Wilkinson in August and put it him up in a studio residency through September. The public exhibit will be open from Oct. 2 to Nov. 1.
The artist stipend totals $4,000 with $3,000 budgeted for supplies and $1,000 for an artist fee. The exhibit will promote community engagement and conversation throughout the exhibition term bringing a new exciting cultural experience to the Near Southside.
The exhibition space is a transparent temporary gallery space created from a 20' x 8' x 8' shipping container. Art may be placed inside or outside the space allowing the artist to combine both areas for a unique and dynamic experience. The artwork, property of Fort Worth South Inc. will be sold after the exhibition. ArtSouth will keep 50 percent of the sales to continue the program and the remaining 50 percent will be rewarded to the artist.
Come out to see what Wilkinson created in his temporary exhibition space and engage in the Near Southside art scene.
