To our readers,
I am writing to provide clarification on a recent social media conversation related to a publisher’s note I wrote in Fort Worth Inc. (Fort Worth Magazine’s sister publication).
In my note, I referenced a reader’s Facebook post suggesting that Fort Worth Magazine has a serious lack of representation of people of color. I took issue with the reader’s post because I believe the editorial across all of our publications to be racially inclusive.
After reexamination of my words, my publisher’s note provided confusion for many. The point I was trying to make (that I made so poorly) was that while our magazines each have a specific target audience, race is not taken into consideration. To those who were offended, I want to offer my most sincere apology.
After receiving feedback, I also recognize that my response was defensive, and I am understanding of those who found that it was dismissive of the reader’s original complaint.
I understand that the platform bestowed upon our magazines comes with a great deal of responsibility. I can say without hesitation that we have not, and never will, discriminate our coverage based on race, religion or creed. The editorial content within our publications will continue to be racially inclusive and diverse. We welcome readers of all ages, races and income brackets to enjoy the wonderful stories we have to tell about our great city.
If it is possible that every storm cloud has a silver lining, I have requested a meeting with the individual who wrote the Facebook post. My hope is that this may help us to better understand each other’s perspectives, as we reflect on the past and navigate the future.
Sincerely,
Hal Brown
