Charles Schwab Challenge
With the Charles Schwab Challenge — i.e., "Colonial," for the locals — exactly one month away, tournament-runners have announced some additional programming adding to the hype surrounding the annual event.
It is the tournament's 75th anniversary, after all.
“This tournament has such a significant place in golf — and Texas — history, and Charles Schwab is honored to help continue its tradition during this historic 75th anniversary year,” Jonathan Craig, senior executive vice president of investor services and marketing at Charles Schwab, said in a statement. “From being associated with some of the greatest names to ever play the game, to its position last year as the first sporting event to return amidst the pandemic, the tournament has long held a deeper meaning given its history — and we are excited to once again demonstrate our commitment to Colonial, its fans, and the Dallas-Fort Worth community through our programming this year.”
Here's what's teed up.
"The Challengers" Film Series
In correlation with the tournament, the Charles Schwab Challenge is also launching a series of digital content titled "The Challengers," featuring episodes highlighting various aspects and icons in the sport. Episodes include a tribute to Ben Hogan, the tournament's first champion in 1946, and the story of the Justs, a Louisville family that makes handcrafted hickory and persimmon golf clubs similar to the ones Hogan made famous. The 5: Schwab Performance Center
During the tournament, an interactive performance center will be onsite at Colonial, showcasing the five modern fundamentals of both golf and investing and illustrating the correlations between Hogan's philosophy and Schwab's approach to investing and retirement. A Hogan-themed activation will also help visitors improve all aspects of their own golf game.
The Champion's New Car
Along with the iconic Leonard Trophy and Scottish royal tartan plaid jacket, the winner of the Charles Schwab Challenge also gets to drive home with a new car. This year's car hasn't been revealed yet.
In 2019, tournament champion Kevin Na was awarded a fully renovated and customized 1973 Dodge Challenger, paying homage to the year Schwab was founded. He gave the car to his caddie, Kenny Harms.
Remembering Fallen Heroes
Since Colonial takes place during Memorial Day weekend, the tournament will also pay tribute to members of the U.S. military who gave their lives in service to their country. A moment of silence will take place during play on May 30, accompanied by a flyover of military aircraft.
The Charles Schwab Challenge takes place May 27 – 30 at Colonial Country Club. More information is available here.
