Colonial Country Club
Colonial’s Birdies For Charity set a record of giving for the organization during the 2024 Charles Schwab Challenge, generating more than $20 million for 33 nonprofits.
Tournament and Fort Worth Colonial Charities Inc. officials gathered with representatives from the nonprofits on Friday to mark breaking the $20 million milestone in the campaign’s 20th year.
The figure raised represents one of the largest on the PGA Tour, Colonial officials said.
The total includes pledges boosted by a matching fund of $280,000 from Fort Worth Colonial Charities Inc., the tournament’s philanthropic entity.
“It is extremely rewarding that we exceeded the $20 million milestone in the 20th year of Birdies For Charity,” said Logan Dickinson, chair of the Charles Schwab Challenge Birdies For Charity, in a statement. “This shows the commitment and dedication we have from all 33 charities and the impact that it is making on the community.”
Since the program’s inception locally in 2005, the annual Birdies For Charity campaign has generated $171,001,636 for participating charities.
The tournament’s nonprofit organization partners worked to secure pledges from supporters based on the number of birdies registered at the tournament. The PGA Tour pros did their part by making 1,116 birdies during the Charles Schwab Challenge in May.
The breadth of donations focus on children and support a variety of programs, including camp scholarships for disabled, special needs or low-income children, residency programs/services for abused, neglected and at-risk children, cultural programs/field trips for underserved students, college scholarships, educational mentoring programs, medical diagnostic and treatment services for disabled and low-income children, afterschool programs, support services for homeless families and more.
Military-related charities are also a significant part of the tournament’s activities. Working with Military Warriors Support Foundation, Higginbotham and Vermeer Equipment, the tournament and Fort Worth Colonial Charities have helped donate 26 homes to injured veterans since 2011. They also partner with Lockheed Martin to send care packages overseas to soldiers annually and worked with the Rainwater Foundation to host active and retired military personnel during the tournament. This year, Colonial also worked with MorningStar Partners to host a replica Vietnam War Memorial.
Over the past three decades the 78-year-old Charles Schwab Challenge tournament has generated cash and services for more than 150 different, mostly local nonprofits, surpassing $220 million, according to the club.
