City Center Fort Worth
City Center Fort Worth will host 200 first responders on Sept. 9 for the second annual 9/11 Memorial Tower Climb.
The event, which honors those who lost lives on Sept. 11, 2001, is open to first responders from North Texas by advance registration at citycenterfw.com/memorial-tower-climb.
First responders from City Center Security, local police and fire departments, county sheriff offices, and FBI agents will climb the stairs of the Bank of America Tower from the ground floor to the 36th floor.
The climbers will repeat the 36-story climb a total of three times to approximate the 110-story climb to the top of the New York World Trade Center. Each climber will wear a lanyard with a photo and name of a first responder who answered the call of duty in 2001 at the World Trade Center.
Of the 2,977 victims killed in the 2001 attacks, 415 were first responders, including 343 firefighters; 37 Port Authority and New Jersey police officers; 23 New York City police officers; eight private EMTs and paramedics; three New York State Court Officers; one New York Fire Patrol officer and one FBI Special Agent.
Over the course of three hours in 2001, 121 engine companies, 62 ladder companies and 27 fire officers were deployed to the scene. All off-duty firefighters were recalled — the first time the FDNY issued a total recall in more than 30 years.
Registration fee is $40, which will be donated to the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation and the Brotherhood of the Fallen. Registration will open at 7 a.m. and the event will begin at 8:25 a.m. on Sept. 9 with opening remarks from City Center Management CEO Johnny Campbell, City Center Security Chief Joel Glenn, and local dignitaries.
In 2022, many participants climbed the tower in full uniform including some in full tactical or bunker gear in honor of what our fallen heroes endured on Sept. There will be a designated seating area on Commerce Street for spectators to watch and cheer on the participants.
A pipe and drum band will play “Amazing Grace” following a moment of silence at 8:46 a.m. to mark the time American Airlines Flight 11 hit the North Tower of the World Trade Center in New York.
First responders will begin their climb at 8:47 a.m. at the sound of Fire Engine No. 1’s siren. (The old Fire Station No. 1 sits at the base of the towers.)
