Colonial Country Club
The Charles Schwab Challenge, originally scheduled for May 18 – 24, will now take place June 8 – 14 and with no spectators.
The annual PGA TOUR contest at Colonial Country Club has gone through a few name changes over the past five years, just two years ago becoming the Charles Schwab Challenge when the financial services corporation took over as title sponsor.
But this time, it looks like Charles Schwab is here to stay.
The PGA TOUR and the Charles Schwab Corporation announced Tuesday that the title sponsorship for the Charles Schwab Challenge has been extended through 2026. This year's tournament begins Thursday and runs through Sunday.
Of course, most locals refer to the tournament colloquially as simply, "Colonial," with each contest having been played at Colonial Country Club dating back to 1946 when Ben Hogan won the inaugural event. It's the PGA TOUR's longest-running event held at the same location, celebrating its 75th anniversary this year.
“This tournament has such a significant place in golf — and Texas — history, and Charles Schwab is honored to help continue its tradition during this historic 75th anniversary year — and now proudly through 2026,” Jonathan Craig, senior executive vice president of investor services and marketing at Charles Schwab, said in a statement. “The tournament has long held a deeper meaning given its history and is so important to the Metroplex community where our firm has a proud history and deep footprint of its own. We are honored to further our commitment to Colonial, its fans, and the Dallas-Fort Worth region, and as title sponsor, bring continued stability to this storied event.”
Charles Schwab's history with the PGA TOUR dates back to 1997, when the corporation first joined as an official marketing partner. In 2001, the Charles Schwab Cup was introduced as PGA TOUR Champions’ first-ever, season-long points competition to identify the leading player on the TOUR. Two years later, the company became a sponsor of the Charles Schwab Cup Championship.
Charles Schwab and the TOUR made history in 2015 when the organizations announced a 20-year extension of their multifaceted Official Marketing Partnership, becoming the longest marketing agreement the TOUR has ever entered. The agreement included Schwab's title as Official Investment Firm of the PGA TOUR and PGA TOUR Champions; Schwab's umbrella sponsorship of the season-long Charles Schwab Cup competition on PGA TOUR Champions; and Schwab's sponsorship of the season-ending Charles Schwab Cup Championship.
In 2019, Schwab became the title sponsor of Colonial; and in 2020, the Charles Schwab Challenge was the first PGA TOUR event to return following a three-month shutdown due to COVID-19. Daniel Berger, following a playoff with Collin Morikawa, earned the Leonard Trophy and Scottish royal tartan plaid jacket.
The tournament continues to place a strong emphasis on philanthropy. In 2019 and 2020, the Charles Schwab Challenge raised more than $15 million through its Birdies for Charity and Rise to the Challenge campaigns, working with 34 charities. Other organizations supported by the Charles Schwab Challenge include military charities and First Tee of Fort Worth. According to the tournament, the event has impacted more than 150 different organizations in the last two decades, totaling more than $130 million.
“We couldn’t be more thrilled with the renewal announcement. Charles Schwab has been a wonderful partner, and we are honored to have them as part of our event,” Jim Whitten, Charles Schwab Challenge tournament chairman, said in a statement. “Colonial Country Club and the city of Fort Worth are thrilled with Charles Schwab’s commitment to golf and our community.”
