Women across Dallas and Tarrant County are wearing red to raise awareness about the dangers of cardiovascular disease in women.
National Wear Red Day, part of the Go Red for Women Movement, will take place Friday. This year marks the 17th Go Red for Women Movement, which has provided a platform for women to come together to help change the lives of others.
The American Heart Association, which sponsors Go Red for Women, is a Dallas-based organization that raises awareness for heart disease and provides funding for heart research. Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in women, killing one in three.
Education about cardiovascular health is an important tool to help combat the disease, according to the American Heart Association. The hope is that through a variety of digital experiences, the movement will be able to help lower the number of cardiac events — of which nearly 80 percent are preventable.
“This year, we’re excited to provide women across North Texas the opportunity to engage with Go Red for Women from their homes and learn heart-health information that could truly save their lives,” Emilie Blaine, the executive director of the Tarrant County Division, said in a statement.
A give-a-thon will air on ABC on Feb. 28, and the Go Red for Women Experience will be held digitally on April 23. To learn more about Go Red for Women, go to goredforwomen.org and heart.org/tarrantcountygored.
