College football may carry an air of uncertainty this year due to COVID-19 — but, hey, you can still get discounts for wearing purple on Fridays in support of TCU.
Go Purple Friday, the school's annual effort to hype up spirit by encouraging fans to wear purple on Fridays, is launching again this week. That means wearing purple can get you various discounts at participating restaurants, shops, and service providers. A full list of participants is available here.
TCU mascot SuperFrog and his hype squad are also changing up the way they interact with fans. Rather than visiting businesses, the crew will host "SuperFrog Drive-Bys" at different Fort Worth neighborhoods on the weeks that TCU has a home game — an event launched in the spring during the start of the pandemic. TCU will announce the drive-by location every Wednesday on its SuperFrog social media channels (@superfrog1873 on Instagram and Facebook, and @TCUSuperFrog on Twitter). The first stop is the Tanglewood neighborhood on Friday at 5 p.m.
"We are staying connected with our fanbase through these drive-bys and had such success with them earlier this year, we thought we would bring them back," Jeremiah Donati, TCU director of intercollegiate athletics, said in a statement. "It was overwhelming to see the support throughout Fort Worth."
TCU's season opener against SMU, originally scheduled for Friday, had to be postponed after some student-athletes and support staff tested positive for COVID-19. According to TCU, none are experiencing major health issues and are abiding by CDC protocols. The Frogs are still scheduled to play Iowa State on Sept. 26.
Meanwhile, head coach Gary Patterson — who's been wowing fans with his musical chops amid the pandemic — just dropped a new single, "Game On." Listen to it here.
