Hey Skate fans, the wait will soon be over to shred the new Fire Station Skate Park located at 1616 Hemphill Street. Save the date because this epic park is scheduled to celebrate its grand opening on Saturday, April 29 from 11 a.m. – 5 p.m.
This grand opening celebration will include appearances by the Magnolia Skate Team, and the Dickies Skate Team to break in the course and inspire your next impossible trick.
But wait there's more.
No skate day would be complete without some tunes. The bands set to crank this opening ceremony to eleven include Trauma Ray and Mean Motor Scooter.
The official ribbon-cutting ceremony for this event will take place at 1 p.m. followed by demonstrations and autographs from the Dickies Skateboarding Team.
This skate park was built on a budget of approximately $1.6 million, to serve as a signature public space unlike any other in North Texas, according to a release.
Fire Station Park features an exciting set of amenities including an urban skate plaza for all skill levels, a pump track for BMX bikes, a market plaza for local vendors and space for other gatherings. This park also hosts a central green for open play and public events, and a fenced dog park for unleashed fun.
This master plan was driven by extensive public input during community workshops, starting in 2016. The Near Southside Inc. team, working with consulting partner Project for Public Spaces and the City’s Park & Recreation Department, secured adoption of the park master plan by the City in early 2019 before turning full attention to final design plans and a fundraising campaign to turn the dream into reality.
“After 7 long years of dreaming, designing, fundraising, and construction it is time to take down the fences and celebrate this landmark new community space,” a spokesperson for Near Southside Inc. says. “We’re planning a full day of all-ages family-friendly fun with skateboarding competitions, live music, market vendors, games on the lawn, food, and much more.”
