Someone mentioned to me that they heard a motivational speaker. They were super excited about this person and began to tell me about their motivational experience. Let me get something straight….I'm a big supporter of motivation. Well maybe “big supporter” is a little strong. Honestly, I couldn't care less about motivational speakers, and I'm pretty sure I've never heard one. Kinda explains a lot about some of my previous blogs doesn't it?
Okay, so as I said I don't really care about motivational speakers. I'm fine with whatever gets people going in a progressive direction. If lighting incense and singing I'm A Little Tea Pot is what it takes to get your ball rolling, then by all means have at it. However, the whole motivational speaker thing causes me to have quite a few questions.
Is “motivational speaker” really a specific career? I walk around all the time and spout random stuff that motivates people (sometimes not in a good way), but I had no idea I could maybe jot this down on a resume. How neato is that?
Can I put a cup on my desk and ask $1 for my motivational advice? What sort of idiot just gives away motivational nuggets of wisdom for free?
Who are these people who are paying someone to tell them stuff they already know?
Where do I go to meet more people who are looking for motivation and are willing to pay for it?
If so many people are willing to pay for motivation why aren't there more motivated people?
How do you know if you need to be motivated?
Why can't people motivate themselves? Self motivation would be free, and you might not have to leave the house. Those two things give me a lot of motivation.
Do you know if you're the jerk wad or the non-motivator the motivational speaker is referring to?
If you don't know YOU are the jerk wad, then what are you doing there? It’s been my finding that jerk wads tend to be self starters and don’t really need much motivation.
See, what a tailspin all this motivational speaking business has sent me into? I've got to do more research on this subject. While I'm thinking about it, I'm going to add “motivator” to my list of skills. I don't see any need for my personal motivation specifics. I find people respond better when I personalize my motivational advice.
