The June 2012 Fort Worth, Texas magazine is the annual Best 0f issue where you, the readers, tell us the places and things you like best about where we live.
We always look forward to this issue because the covers are so much fun to do. This year, our very talented art director Spray Gleaves, an award-winning graphic artist and professor of fine arts at Dallas Baptist University, did the artwork we hung on a gallery wall for the cover photograph. Don't know how much fun that was for her, but the rest of us certainly enjoyed it.
As you look through the 203 picks for Best of this and that, you might keep your eyes open for categories we have overlooked. The ballot is never exactly the same each year, and we're always in the search for something new and different. If you have an idea, shoot me an email for us to consider when the 2013 edition rolls around.
My favorite Best this year: Retiring Coach Tommy Elliott of Arlington Heights. Well done, Tommy. You will be missed.
Mark your calendars for the Best of 2012 Party, June 9 at the Cendera Center. The theme is “The Rat Pack,” and this is always a wonderful party. You can reserve tickets at fwtx.com.
In a considerably less cheerful feature, Managing Editor Jennifer Casseday-Blair takes a look at H.H. Holmes, one of the first documented serial killers in America. No one really knows how many people he killed but it could have been as many as 200. He even built a hotel in Chicago with hidden stairways to facilitate his passion for murder and torture. And he was in the process of building something similar in Fort Worth in the 1890s before he became discouraged by the strict law enforcement in Cowtown and moved on.
Elsewhere … Heywood reminds us of the similarities between the very young and the very old and we look at deep-sea fishing along the Texas Gulf Coast … suggest ways to protect yourself from UV exposure … detail products for the modern man … look at beach fashions … and suggest gift ideas for dads.
As always … let us hear your reactions.
